About Us
An interdisciplinary research center at the University of New Mexico advancing Quantum Information Science for over 25 years.
Our Mission
Interdisciplinary Research in Quantum Information Science
The Center for Quantum Information and Control (CQuIC) is an interdisciplinary research center located at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque with activities across the departments of Physics & Astronomy, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Chemistry & Chemical Biology.
Research at CQuIC is focused on Quantum Information Science, including quantum computation, quantum simulation and complexity, quantum control and measurement, quantum metrology, and quantum optics and communication.
CQuIC is an NSF Focused Research Hub in Theoretical Physics (FRHTP) and a key participant in National Quantum Initiative Centers.
Collaborations
Partnerships & Consortia
National Lab Partners
CQuIC closely partners with Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as the University of Arizona in Tucson. These partnerships provide collaborations and research opportunities for students and postdocs.
Quantum Information Edge
CQuIC is a member of the Quantum Information Edge, a nationwide alliance of national labs, universities, and industry advancing the frontiers of quantum computing systems to maintain U.S. leadership in next-generation information technology.
SQuInT Network
CQuIC is the administrative home of Southwest Quantum Information and Technology (SQuInT). Founded in 1998, SQuInT facilitates resource exchange among universities, national labs, and industry across the southwestern US. The annual SQuInT Workshop is one of the longest-running interdisciplinary QIS conferences.

National QIS Centers
CQuIC participates in three major National Quantum Initiative centers, placing UNM at the forefront of the U.S. quantum effort.
NSF Focused Research Hub in Theoretical Physics
CQuIC is one of two-in-the-nation NSF Focused Research Hubs in Theoretical Physics. The FRHTP enhances breakthroughs at the intellectual frontier of QIS by promoting collaborative research and hosts prized postdoctoral fellowships.
NSF Award PHY-2116246Q-SEnSE — Quantum Systems through Entangled Science and Engineering
CQuIC participates in the NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute led by the University of Colorado Boulder. Nearly forty researchers share quantum expertise in multi-disciplinary teams investigating promising solutions to formidable quantum challenges.
Visit Q-SEnSEQuantum Systems Accelerator (QSA)
Co-led by Lawrence Berkeley and Sandia National Laboratories, QSA pairs advanced quantum prototypes (neutral atoms, trapped ions, superconducting circuits) with algorithms for imperfect hardware, targeting scientific computing, materials science, and fundamental physics.

Local Environs
CQuIC is housed in the Physics & Astronomy and Interdisciplinary Science building (PAÍS) at UNM. PAÍS offers state-of-the-art laboratories and collaboration spaces and is part of the Interdisciplinary Science Cooperative — the hub of interdisciplinary research at UNM.
UNM is located in beautiful Albuquerque, New Mexico, a wonderful environment for those who love the outdoors: hiking, biking, and skiing in the Sandia Mountains, with a rich Native American and Spanish colonial history and culture. Albuquerque offers a low cost of living with a vibrant arts and food scene.
